Components

Formed (drawn components), forged (fasteners)

Formed and forged metal components possessing some bilateral or better symmetry are candidates for testing with the ARIS system. The resonance mode EMAT technology is well suited to screen out manufacturing anomalies in fasteners that may lead to product failures in the manufacturing environment or in the field. Whether it is a blank or a completed fastener queued for final inspection, the ARIS system has been used to address quality issues including delamination, surface or subsurface cracks, “soft” metal conditions and plating defects which may go undetected with other inspection techniques.

The ARIS system allows the user to not only eliminate defective parts but to accurately determine the source of defects depending upon the placement of the equipment into the manufacturing process. The result of this is higher first pass yields and the allowance for continual process improvements. Most importantly, the ARIS system can inspect at a rate of up to 50 parts per minute when integrated with existing material handling equipment.

Analytical capabilities for components:

Surface and subsurface defects/delaminations
Alloy identification
Heat treatment verification

Applicable case studies and technical documents:

Delamination detection in thick walled drawn steel component
Defect analysis of forged steel tapered spindles
Case depth analysis of hardened steel
Demonstration of defect detection in 8mm bolts
Demonstration of defect detection in Flat head bolts
Crack Detection in Con-rod bolts
